The cost of keeping Magento

Magento Open Source has no licence fee. The bill comes from everything around it: the build, servers sized for it, a developer on retainer for Adobe's security fixes and upgrades, and extension licences renewed every year. Set your sales below and see what that comes to next to WhizzyCommerce, year by year, with every figure sourced.

Why move from Magento

Magento's costs are the ones that come whether you sell or not. Here they are part of the plan.

  • No build

Pick a theme from the catalogue and your Magento 2 shop comes across: products, customers, orders and promotions. No agency project before the first sale.

  • No upgrades to pay for

Hosting, security fixes and new features are ours to run. No PHP versions, no release lines, no extension that breaks on the next patch.

  • A bill that follows your sales

€0 a month on Free and 1.5% of each sale, or €49 and 0.35% on Pro, never more than €499 in a month.

  • Run it by talking to it

An AI assistant in the dashboard, and an MCP connector to run the shop from Claude or ChatGPT: ask for a sale on a collection, see every price it would change, confirm, undo in one click.

Why Magento costs the most for a shop this size

Someone has to build the shop, host it on servers sized for it, apply Adobe's security fixes (there were four in the four months to October 2026) and keep the extensions working through each upgrade. For a shop selling under €1 million a year that comes to more than the sales can carry, and the calculator uses the low end of every published range, so most Magento shops pay more than it shows.

Magento is still the stronger tool for several websites and store views in one install, B2B quoting in Adobe Commerce, or an integration only its marketplace has. Our Magento comparison sets out where.

How the figures are worked out

  • Sales grow by the rate you choose from the second year on, and orders are sales divided by your average order.
  • WhizzyCommerce: each year on whichever plan costs less for it, Free at €0 and 1.5% or Pro at €49 and 0.35% with the bill capped at €499 a month, plus Stripe at 1.5% + €0.25 for European cards. Hosting, upgrades and every feature are included.
  • Magento Open Source: the build in year one; then managed hosting (€149 a month, €299 above €250,000 of sales), a support retainer (€300, €1,000 or €2,000 a month by size) and extension licences (€1,000 to €3,000 a year), all at the low end of published ranges, plus the same Stripe rate.
  • Left out: VAT, refunds, disputes, a designer and your own time, on both sides.

Sources

  • Develo's Shopify vs Magento TCO calculator, from a Gold Hyvä partner: for a £1 million shop, Magento with Hyvä at £80,000 to build, £18,000 a year of support and £8,100 a year of hosting, well above the figures used here.
  • Hyvä: the Hyvä Theme licence is free; Hyvä Checkout is €1,000, then €250 a year. Not counted here.
  • Managed Magento hosting: MGT Commerce, €149 a month for a single server and €299 for multi-server.
  • Security patches: Adobe's release schedule, with isolated fixes in July, August, September and October 2026.
  • Build and retainer ranges: published 2026 agency guides (qualimero.com, limely.co.uk, iwdagency.com), €15,000 to €30,000 for plain Open Source and €40,000 to €80,000 with Hyvä; retainers €200 to €500 a month plain, €1,000 to €3,000 with Hyvä. Extensions $199 (Mageplaza) to $889 (Amasty) a module.
  • Card processing on both sides: Stripe's European pricing, 1.5% + €0.25.

Questions

Are the Magento figures fair?

They are the low end of published agency and hosting ranges: a €15,000 build, €149 a month of managed hosting and a €300 a month support retainer for a small shop. A build with Hyvä and integrations is often €40,000 to €80,000, and many Magento shops pay several times the retainer.

What does moving from Magento bring across?

Categories, products with their variants, prices, stock and images, customers, order history and promotions with their coupon codes, from Magento 2 Open Source or Adobe Commerce. CMS pages, reviews and store-view overrides stay behind. The details are on switching from Magento.

Is the move really free?

Yes, while the 100 free places last: we run the move for you. After that the same tool is there to run yourself.
